Two horizontal scenes with a shared warm, terracotta architectural backdrop. In the top scene Jesus is bound to a column as soldiers prepare to scourge him, while a figure on a raised platform speaks to a crowd. In the bottom scene Christ sits with a crown of thorns before officials and spectators; the composition uses Duccio’s elongated figures, linear contours, gold halos, and a restrained palette of reds, ochres, and blues within a decorative, planar space.
