Frequently Asked Questions
What is libera.art?
libera.art makes public domain data about artworks accessible and easy to explore. All artwork information comes from Wikidata, a free and open knowledge base maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation.
The project aims to contribute back to the Wikimedia ecosystem. Improvements and corrections made here can be fed back into Wikidata, benefiting all projects that use this open data.
Why do you use AI-generated descriptions?
Traditional metadata like artist name, title, and date don't capture what you actually see in an artwork. AI-generated descriptions add information about the visual content — colors, composition, subjects, and artistic style.
This makes it possible to search for artworks based on what they depict, not just their catalog information. For example, instead of only searching for "Monet", you could search for "water lilies at sunset" or "impressionist garden scene" and find relevant works across different artists and collections.
