The Transfiguration

Centered on a raised ochre hill, Christ stands in a cobalt-blue mantle with gold vertical lines and a red inner garment, holding a book in one hand and giving a blessing with the other. He is flanked by two bearded figures with halos, one in brown on the left and the other in purple on the right, while kneeling apostles with halos occupy the lower foreground, looking upward in adoration. The scene is set against a flat gold ground with stylized, linear drapery and bright, jewel-like colors, reflecting Duccio’s Italo-Byzantine–Sienese Gothic style and a ceremonial, hierarchical composition.
